The Alexander Technique in Sport

Unnecessary muscle tension just wastes energy and makes you more tired more quickly. The Alexander Technique enables you to move with greater freedom, resulting in more efficient use of your muscular fitness. You might also find that repeat injuries you used to suffer, no longer occur. This is because you have changed what you do that was causing the injury to happen.

I have worked with runners, cyclists, swimmers and horse riders to date, but my own experience of playing racquet sports such as badminton and squash and also in doing activities such as yoga has shown me that Alexander Technique can be a great help in these as well.

The Technique helps you to stop fighting your body and learn to move freely with minimal effort. This comes about by reducing the muscular tension in the area around joints (mainly the hip and shoulder joints) allowing the joints to move without the brakes on! We also work on encouraging the back to be strong to enable it to support the body effectively. The muscles of the back are the main postural muscles but we often don’t use them appropriately and they become weak.

The Alexander Technique has been called a breathing technique since Alexander himself worked with many actors and speakers and helped them with their breathing. In sport, using the Technique can be of huge benefit in helping you breathe more easily, particularly useful in endurance sports such as triathlons.

During my training, I worked with five people who run, cycle and swim. To read more about this work
