Good posture on the horse, a secure seat and soft hands are the basic requirements for riding safely and without pain. The Alexander Technique is ideal to achieve these aims and as it works to help people unlearn old unhelpful habits and learn a positive new skill to apply in all situations. It is therefore perfect for those who have been riding a while and picked up some not so helpful habits!
The Technique also helps with jobs around the yard as you learn to move and lift differently. This means that the usual mucking out backache can be dealt with, and lifting and moving bales, rugs, tack etc can be carried out with much less effort.
I work with people in 3 ways…
One-to-one lessons away from the horse, in which we look at all aspects of how you move and use your body. These take place at my room at the Kendal Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Centre, Yard 96, Stricklandgate, Kendal. I recommend starting with these lessons so that you can find out what postural and other muscular habits you have and start to learn to change them before attempting to change whilst riding.
One-to-one lessons on a horse. In these we work on postural and habitual tension patterns that show up when riding. These lessons can be on your own horse at your own premises or on a horse at Larkrigg Riding School, Natland, near Kendal, or at a riding school of your choice.
Tellington TTouch Equine Awareness Method (TTEAM). I work with you and your horse using TTEAM to help you both become more flexible, less tense, better balanced and coordinated. For more information on TTEAM click on here.
