Lying Down - Semi Supine. The benefit for your back

This is an excellent procedure which anyone can practise at the end of the day or when you get in from work. Ideally you should lie down for about 20 minutes, which at first can be quite difficult. However, it becomes easier as you realise the benefits for your back. It is particularly useful for those people who find it difficult to stop!

How to…

Lie on the floor (not a bed which is too soft), place two or three books under your head so that your throat is not restricted or your head too far back. Your spine should now be able to go flat on the floor with no arch. Your arms by your side with your hands on your stomach, and your knees bent. Now, stay there, breathing naturally for at least 15 minutes. You will be amazed at how rested you become and how much more energetic you feel when you get up again. See if you can let go of any thoughts of work or other things you need to be doing.

This procedure helps you to notice any imbalances and tension in your body and you can use the time to allow yourself to let them go. The back becomes shortened during the day as we sit at the computer or stand at work, and this practice allows the back to regain its flexibility and full length.
