The Posture Clinic

Erica Donnison of The Posture Clinic in Cumbria

The Posture Clinic works with the link between posture and emotion, working with people (and horses) to increase physical and emotional self awareness, find ease and poise in movement and enhance feelings of well-being, through experiencing optimal postural tone.

My aim in my work is to help people feel better about themselves by understanding more about how they function in the world. Many of us have tension patterns, some that will have been in place for many years. Some we can cope with, or at least have some coping mechanisms which may or may not be truly helpful, but others cause pain and discomfort on a daily basis.

I help people find positive ways to work with the pressures that they face by understanding how they react to them, then finding ways to be more in control of those reactions. When we feel more in control of ourselves and our reactions, then we can feel more in control of the outside world and less like we are being buffeted around.

Being more aware of our habitual ways of functioning is the starting point to change – you can’t change something if you don’t know you are doing it!

The Posture Clinic is underpinned by the Alexander Technique to help you learn how to look after yourself and find ease and poise with more awareness of how you move and think.

Many of us find ourselves sitting for long periods at work or at home and then notice we have back pain or discomfort in our shoulders or neck. Learning how to be aware of how you are sitting, standing or moving enables you to prevent these pains from happening, and improve your postural tone.

Increased freedom of movement and balance happen without you trying, and the resulting good posture is an added bonus!

Musicians find learning the Alexander Technique to be incredibly helpful to manage the stress of performance as well as learning how to play with less effort and greater ease. Let the music flow!

If sport is your thing, the Alexander Technique is the perfect addition to your training regime and can help you in so many ways… alexander-technique-and-sports

The Posture Clinic combines the Alexander Technique with Tellington TTouch Training for Horses

Horses often suffer from similar problems to us; poor posture and tension in the back and neck, resulting in stiffness in movement and behavioural issues.  I can help you help your horse to be happier, calmer and more flexible and coordinated, and help you create the best relationship possible.

The Posture Clinic combines the Alexander Technique with the MBTI® (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) which is a non-judgmental personality type questionnaire.

Have you ever noticed that when people are not feeling confident or are having a bad day, their posture displays this to the outside world? The link between posture and emotion or psychological state is often clear to see. Understanding how you function in the world and interact with others helps you get control over your habitual behaviour and clarity about who you really are.

The Posture Clinic combines the Alexander Technique with Pose Running to help runners run more efficiently, with greater ease and less pain.
